Interaction on ‘Recent Defence Related Developments in China: Implications’

Amb Ashok K Kantha, India’s former Ambassador to China and Distinguished Fellow, VIF, spearheaded an internal discussion on President Xi Jinping’s era of military reforms and China’s concomitant strategies. In his presentation, the former Ambassador to China touched upon issues related to modernisation of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA), drive against corruption, reshuffle of high military leadership, profile of coercive military posture, and impact of China’s sluggish economy on its military budget.

Interaction with H.E. Dr. Sau Mohammad Al-Sati, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to India

The VIF was privileged to host H.E. Dr. Sau Mohammad Al-sati, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia in India, for bilateral talks on 03 May 2017. The interaction began with General NC Vij, Director, VIF, highlighting the growing trajectory of India-Saudi Arabia bilateral relationship, to which trade in energy and people to people contacts have been major contributors over the years.

Round Table Discussion on Deep-Water Gas Pipeline

Dr T N Rao, on behalf of South Asia Gas Enterprise Private Ltd (SAGE), a consortium led by the Indian Siddho Mal Group, laid out a presentation for the VIF faculty on building a deep-water, trans-national, natural gas pipeline system from the Middle East to India.

Interaction with Chinese Scholars on the Belt & Road Initiative

With Beijing upping its diplomatic ante on its ‘Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a group of Chinese scholars, led by Amb Liu Jinsong, visited the VIF to seek support for an international conference on the BRI slated to take place in Beijing on 14 & 15 May 2017. Briefing on the benefits of BRI accruing to India and the agenda of the conference, the delegation opined that that India’s participation will contribute to the success of the conference.

Interaction with Delegation of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China

A ten-member delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China, with Mr Yang Yu leading and Mr Wu Songlin, Mr Li Bijian, Ms Zhang Mengzhuo, among others, as members of the delegation, held a broad-ranging interaction with the VIF’s faculty on issues of mutual interest.

Visit of Delegation from Peking University, China

Mr Liu Xianjing, Deputy Director General of International Cooperation Center (ICC) for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), led a delegation from Peking University (China) to visit the VIF. The visit was aimed furthering the bilateral relations through appreciation of each other’s viewpoints on a number of critical issues.

Interaction with Australian Delegation

The VIF held a closed-door informal interaction with a five-member Australian delegation led by Mr Graham Fletcher, First Assistant Secretary, North East Asia, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia), and comprising of Mr Adam Clancy, Ms Jenny Grant-Curnow, Ms Jacinta Hudson and Mr Cameron Bruce as its members.

Visit of Taiwanese Delegation

The VIF hosted a four-member Taiwanese delegation led by Maj Gen Yuan-Shiun Chang and comprising of Capt Cheng-Hua Hsu, Lt Cdr Jin-Tong Jang and Capt Tzong Shiaw Yen for an interaction over issues of mutual interests. During the interaction, the security environment, India’s Act East Policy, maritime challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, economic and security cooperation, and cultural exchanges were discussed.

Interaction with Japanese Delegation

H E Koji OMI, Mr Yutaka Kikuta, Mr Takayuki Shirao, Mr Toru Kukaya, Mr Naoyoshi Noguchi and Mr Kazuhisa Yoshida called on the VIF’s faculty for an interaction on ‘India-Japan Relations: the Way Ahead’. The delegation interacted across a wide range of bilateral and regional issues with a three-member VIF’s panel comprising General NC Vij, Director, VIF, Lt Gen Ravi Sawhney, Dean, Centre for Defence Studies, and Mr Vikas Khitha, Head of Business Development of Larsen & Toubro Limited.

Visit of VIF Delegation to Taiwan

A delegation from VIF visited Taiwan from 23 to 27 November 2016. The visit was undertaken with the aim of giving a new impetus to India-Taiwan Relations.
