Interaction with Delegation from Research Institute of Indian Ocean Economies, Kunming, China

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a delegation from the Research Institute of Indian Ocean Economies (RIIO), Kunming, China, led by Prof. Zhu Cuiping and comprised of Dr Liu Peng, Dr Li Yanfang and Dr Zhong Ai. The. Dr Arvind Gupta delivered the opening remarks. Discussions were held on the current status of India-China Relations and the way forward, global geopolitics and triangular relationship between India-US and China, India’s Act East Policy and the prospects of India-China economic cooperation.

The One Belt One Road Initiative or the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is one of the most widely discussed topics in the Chinese Foreign Policy. It has been five years since the launch of the BRI. On 17 May 2013 and 7 September 2013, Xi Jinping delivered speeches in Indonesia and Kazakhstan respectively highlighting the importance of connectivity vis-a-vis these countries with China. Against this background, Tom Miller’s book on the BRI is an opportunity to analyse the developments of the initiative.

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a delegation from the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC), led by Ms Huang Yihua, the Deputy Director General of Research Office of the IDCPC and comprised of Ms Wang Xiaoying, Mr Wu Hang and Mr Yan Runqing. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, delivered the opening remarks and presided over the session.

Evolution of China-Sri Lanka Relations

Over the last ten years China has been paying renewed attention to its ties with Sri Lanka. There has been a large rise in Chinese investments in various projects in Sri Lanka. Beijing has also diplomatically supported Colombo on various issues, especially on charges of human rights violations. In return, Sri Lanka has played an important role in helping China enhance its influence and prestige in the South Asian region. Notably, since taking over as president, Xi Jinping has accorded special focus to this relationship.

Interaction with Delegation from the Tsinghua University, Beijing

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a delegation from Tsinghua University, Beijing, on 29 August 2018. The delegation was led by Prof. Yan, Xuetong, Dean of the Institute of International Relations, and comprised of Prof. Sun Xuefeng, Dr Li Li and Liu Zhuang. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, delivered the opening remarks and presided over the session. The interaction was attended by Amb. Satish Chandra, Lt Gen Ravi Sawhney, Amb. Prabhat P. Shukla, Amb. R. Rajagopalan, Lt Gen Gautam Banerjee, Amb. TCA Rangachari, Lt. Gen S L Narasimhan and many other think tank members.

Interaction with Dr Ying Rong, on "Global and Regional Environment and India-China Relations"

The Vivekananda International Foundation hosted Dr Ying Rong, Vice President and Senior Research Fellow, China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), China, for an interaction on Sino-Indian relations. Dr Arvind Gupta delivered the opening remarks. Dr Ying Rong gave a comprehensive overview of the course of the Chinese Foreign Policy. He mentioned that the Xi Jinping’s speech at the Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs, the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up and the Boao Forum together form the blueprint of Xi Jinping’s thought on the Foreign Policy.

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a Brainstorming Session on ‘India-China Relations: Global, Regional and Bilateral Context including Future Trajectory’ on 20 August 2018. Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director, VIF, delivered the opening remarks while Amb. Ashok Kantha and Lt Gen S L Narasimha made the presentations which were followed by a discussion. The discussion was attended by Vice Adm K.K Nayyar, Gen N.C. Vij, Amb. Kanwal Sibal, Lt Gen Ravi Sawhney, Lt Gen Gautam Banerjee, Amb. TCA Rangachari, Amb. Rajiv Sikri, Lt Gen A.K Ahuja, and Cmde Gopal Suri.

The path which China will pursue in the coming future is one of the most debated and discussed topic among the current academic and policy making circle. The direction which Chinese politics, society and economy adopt almost directly impacts a large number of countries. In the book China’s Future, David Shambaugh discusses a number of scenarios which may pan out depending on the path which the Chinese political system under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) adopts under Xi Jinping.

Interaction with the Sichuan University Delegation

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a Chinese delegation from Sichuan University, Chengdu, on 07 August 2018. The delegation was led by Associate Prof. Zeng Xiangyu and comprised of Associate Prof. Liu Jiawei, Zhang Chunyan, Zou Zhengxin, Wang Tengfei and Liu Qian. Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, delivered the opening remarks and presided over the session. He raised the structural issues in the bilateral relations and called for introspection from both the sides of the reasons leading to these challenges. Amb.
