Brainstorming Session on Imbalance in Sino-Indian Trade: What to do about it?

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a brain storming session on the topic of ‘Imbalance in Sino-Indian Trade: What to do about it?’ Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director, VIF, delivered the opening remarks. The session was attended by the members of the strategic community, eminent diplomats, members of strategic community and policy-makers dealing with China. "China's Internal Dynamics, Cyber Security and Relations with India"

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organized a seminar titled "China's Internal Dynamics, Relations with India & Cyber Security", along with the Prospect Foundation from Taiwan on 01 November 2017. Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, and Dr. Tan-Sun Chen, Chairman, Prospect Foundation, delivered the opening remarks. Dr. I-Chung Lai, Dr. Yi-Bin Lu, and Mr. Fan Peng participated from the Prospect Foundations whereas Mr. Jayadeva Ranade, Amb. TCA Rangachari, Dr. Sujit Dutta and Lt Gen Davinder Kumar represented the Indian side.

Seminar on India-China Relations and the Way Forward

On 6 November 2017, the Vivekananda International Foundation and the Institute of Chinese Studies jointly held a joint seminar on the “India-China Relations and the Way Forward”. A delegation comprising of Prof. Zhao Bole, Prof. Lu Gang and Prof. Yu Xinli from Yunnan Minzu University, Kunming, and Prof Tan Chung participated in the Seminar. The Impact of China’s “One Belt, One Road” Strategy on Political, Military and Economic Situations in the Asia Pacific Region

Retrospect When one talks about Silk Road it conjures up visions of traders and caravans travelling from Occident to the Orient and vice versa. There have been many versions of silk roads which have been used by both traders and invaders for ages. These silk roads connected many cultures and civilizations and these exchanges were largely mutually beneficial. For instance, along with the trade Buddhist religion spread from India to Afghanistan and then to Central Asia, and beyond to China along one of the many silk roads/routes.

Vimarsha: ‘China’s Belt, Road and India’ talk by Mr RN Ravi

On 14 Jun 2017, Mr RN Ravi, Chairman, Joint Intelligence Committee, Government of India, delivered an illuminating talk on “China's Belt Road and India" under the auspices of Vimarsha series of talks, delivered by persons ofeminence. The talk was attended to by a wide cross-section of people - former military officers, members of the academia, think tanks and civil services, to mention but a few. Consistent with talks under Vimarsha series, the session opened up and concluded with the recital of the Shanti Mantra (invoking the Holy Spirit for universal peace).

Interaction with a Delegation from Shanghai Institute of International Studies

Mr. Chen Dongxiao, President of the Shanghai Institute of International Studies (SIIS), accompanied with Dr. Liu Zongyi, Senior Fellow, SIIS, visited the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) on 03 April 2017 for an interaction on issues of mutual strategic interests to both China and India.

Interaction with a visiting Delegation from Fudan University, China

A four-member delegation of Fudan University (China), led by Prof. Zhang Yi, Executive Vice Director, Fudan Development Institute (China), and comprising Prof. Sun Lijian, Prof. Shen Dingli, and Prof. Lin Minwang as members of the delegation, visited the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) on 03 May 2017. The delegation interacted with members of the VIF faculty across a large spectrum of bilateral and multi-lateral issues.

Interaction on ‘Recent Defence Related Developments in China: Implications’

Amb Ashok K Kantha, India’s former Ambassador to China and Distinguished Fellow, VIF, spearheaded an internal discussion on President Xi Jinping’s era of military reforms and China’s concomitant strategies. In his presentation, the former Ambassador to China touched upon issues related to modernisation of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA), drive against corruption, reshuffle of high military leadership, profile of coercive military posture, and impact of China’s sluggish economy on its military budget.
