Interaction with the Visiting Chinese Delegation led by Amb Yang Yanyi

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a Chinese delegation led by Amb. Yang Yanyi, (Former Head of the Chinese Mission to the European Union). She was accompanied by Mr Zhu Feng, Executive Director of China Center for Collaborative Studies of the South China Sea, Nanjing University, Mr Luo Yi, Deputy Division Director, the Department of Asian Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Ms Chen Xiaoli, Second Secretary, the Department of Policy Planning of MFA. Lt Gen Ravi Sawhney presided over the interaction.

The Great Leap Forward was a campaign run in the People’s Republic of China from 1958 to 1962. Chairman Mao Zedong led the campaign and the aim was to transform an agricultural economy to a socialist society through rapid industrialisation and collectivisation. It led to an economic and social disaster. The policies marginalised Mao, compelling him to launch the Cultural Revolution in 1966 to re-establish his supremacy. Ultimately China stabilised after Mao’s death and Deng Xiaopingcoming to power as the supreme leader of People’s Republic of China.

China-India Interaction from Bilateral to Regional Level, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China

The Center for South Asia-West China Cooperation and Development Studies (SAWCCAD) and the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), Sichuan University, Chengdu, China, organised a conference on ‘China-India Interaction: From Bilateral to Regional Level’ on 25 April 2019. China's Great Leap Forward II

Development of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a fulcrum of the One Belt One Road Initiative through which China seeks to realise the ‘Chinese Dream’ to be a global power and a regional hegemon. The Corridor connects China’s Western Xinjiang with Pakistan’s Makran Coast, traversing through one of the most challenging geographic as well as human terrain that would require extra-ordinary engineering resources to execute, massive amounts to fund and extreme political acumen to manage the untameable societal fissures. That indeed is a tall and complex order.

Interaction with the Tsinghua University, Beijing

The VIF hosted a 23 member delegation from the Tsinghua University, Beijing on 30 January 2019. The delegation was visiting India as a part of O. P. Jindal Global University-Tsinghua India Immersion Programme. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director, delivered the opening remarks and explained the historical significance of the Republic Day for India and that the Indian Constitution guarantees ‘fundamental rights’ to all its citizens that is enforceable in the courts. The democratic system has served us well and unlike Pakistan, India has maintained its unity and integrity.

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted Prof. John Lee of the Hudson Institute, Washington, who spoke on ‘Responding to China's Foreign Policy under Xi Jinping’. Dr Arvind Gupta delivered the opening remarks.

Interaction with the China Institute of Maritime Economy and Technology

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a delegation from the China Institute of Maritime Economy, Beijing, by Mr. Zhijun Yang, the other members of the delegation were Mr. Bin Li, Mr. Yu Wang and Mr. Yang Bo. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director VIF.

On 14 January 2019, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted Prof. Wang Dong, Secretary-General, Pangoal Institution, Beijing. The Prof. exchanged ideas on the potential for enhanced India-China cooperation with the VIF faculty and members of the Confederation of the Indian Industry (CII).
