Commemorative Seminar: India's Evolving Nuclear Posture in a Dynamic Environment

Twelve years ago, on 11 May 1998, India had conducted the Shakti series of Nuclear tests.These had taken the world by surprise and firmly catapulted India into the league of major global powers.To commemorate this seminal event, the VIF organised a seminar on "India's Evolving Nuclear Posture in a Dynamic Regional and International Nuclear Environment". Mr Satish Chandra, former Deputy NSA, traced the evolution of India's Nuclear policy and its future prospects.

Managing Disasters

Gen N C Vij, Vice Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, delivered a talk at VIF on April 16 on “India's need, capacities and challenges of managing national disasters -- both natural and man-made”. Gen Vij also gave a power point presentation on the subject. A number of senior retired and serving government officials from civil and military fields attended the talk and also gave their expert views.

The Great Himalayan Watershed

A seminar was held at VIF on April 10, 2010 on “The Great Himalayan Watershed: Water Issues Impacting India- Perspectives and Challenges”. The seminar was organized in association with The Foundation for Non-violent Action. Speakers at the seminar were Claude Arpi, a French author and journalist, Ashok Jaitly, Distinguished Fellow and Director, Water Resources Division, TERI and Abhinaba Chakravarti of Pragya, an NGO. The aspects of regional water and environmental issues were discussed. Claude Arpi highlighted the issue of the impact of the Chinese proposal to divert the Brahmaputra river.

Speakers from Arunachal Pradesh at a seminar on “The Land of the Rising Sun: Arunachal” today evening stressed on the urgent need for faster integration of the state into the national mainstream and warned of lurking dangers – from missionaries and anti-national groups internally and from China externally. Panelists at the seminar, organised by the Vivekananda International Foundation, unanimously asked the government as well as the people of India to spread better awareness about Arunachal Pradesh instead of routine reaffirmation of how Arunachal is an integral part of the country.
