Monthly Compilation of Views of VIF Expert Groups: September 2020

The month of September saw the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosting members of various Expert Groups via video conferencing. In spirit, the discussions’ were about legacy as they elaborated on the upcoming U.S elections, Prime Minister Abe resigning as the Prime Minister of Japan, and Bangladesh celebrating 50 years of independence next year. Other deliberations also included the major events in Pakistan as well as significant developments in West Asia.

Iran: US Sanctions and Regional and International Perspectives

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) on 29 September 2020 organised a virtual discussion on the topic titled, “Iran: US Sanctions and Regional and International Perspectives”. Amb. D P Srivastava was the key speaker in the discussion. Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director, VIF delivered his opening remarks and provided the broad context for the discussion.

U.S –China Trade and Technology De-Coupling : A Brief on Tariffs, IPO’s and Frauds

Preamble The Trump administration has engaged in an intense competition with China on trade and technology. Until Donald Trump was elected, the U.S had a massive trade deficit with China, while Chinese tech giants were capturing the major markets in the smartphone and 5G segment. With “Make America Great Again” as his election’s core agenda and later, “America First” as his administration’s core principle of the foreign policy sees China as a strategic rival.

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) strives to ensure relevant geo-strategic discussions by different Expert Groups covering global as well as regional issues. In that vein, the groups hosted by VIF not only focused on foreign relations but prioritised discussions on the economic aspects. This issue consists of deliberations on U.S, Pakistan, India-Sri Lanka, India-Germany, and enhancing the regional value chain in South Asia.

Random Thoughts 2019-2020

The scale, intensity and impact of the massive changes the world is witnessing now because of the Covid-19 phenomenon is unprecedented in human history, unthinkable anytime before in the past and constitutes perhaps the greatest challenge to the future of humanity. Greater and bigger disasters in scale, natural and man-made, have hit the world in the distant and recent past.

Battleground Idlib: Russia and Turkey’s Interests amidst the COVID-19 crisis

The civil war in Syria similar to the continuing conflicts in Yemen and Libya has its roots in the 2011 Arab spring protests. The protracted conflict between President Bashar Al-Assad’s forces and a fragmented opposition has been diffused by Russia and Iran and the ruling regime has succeeded to reclaim majority of territories. The north-western governorate of Idlib is one of the last rebel-held regions and the Syrian government is pursuing its efforts to reclaim control since late 2016.

Monthly Compilation of Views of VIF Expert Groups: June-July 2020

As COVID-19 continues to mount heavy casualties worldwide, China’s aggressiveness on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and expansionism in the South China Sea has led India to look for viable strategic solutions to counter China. The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), in response to these transgressions, held several task force meetings engaging with various experts, including former military, diplomats, and distinguished academics.

Developments in West Asia

The Vivekananda International Foundation organised a virtual interactive session on the subject, “Developments in West Asia” on 13 July 2020. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director, VIF delivered his opening remarks and introduced the central topics, i.e. Geopolitics of Oil and Impact of COVID-19 on Regional Economies and Increasing Footprint of China in West Asia and implications for the Indo-Pacific. Dr. Jawad Alnani, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan; Prof. Jonathan Fulton, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi and Amb Anil Trigunayat, Distinguished Fellow, VIF participated in the discussion.

Discussion on India, China and South Asian Neighbours

On 09 July 2020, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted an online discussion on “India, China and South Asian Neighbours”. Dr Arvind Gupta delivered the opening remarks followed by presentations by Dr Raj Verma and Dr Atul Aneja. From the VIF, Amb Ranjit Rae, Gen Ravi Sawhney, Amb Satish Chandra, Prof S.D Muni and Dr Sreeradha Datta participated in the event.

VIF - Prospect Foundation Interaction

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) held a virtual interaction with the Prospect Foundation, Taipei on 18 June 2020. Dr Arvind Gupta, Lt Gen Ravi Sawhney, Mr. Jayadeva Ranade, Amb Ashok Kantha, Amb Arun Singh, Amb Anil Wadhwa and Dr. Jabin Jacob attended the interaction from the VIF. Amb Tan-Sun Chen, Dr I-Chung Lai, Dr Ming-Chi Chen, Prof Mumin Chen and Ms Norah Huang participated from the Prospect Foundation. Dr Arvind Gupta and Amb Tan-Sun Chen delivered the introductory remarks.
