Issues before the 16th BRICS Summit

On September 12, 2024, Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted a talk, delivered by Shri Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs, at VIF on the topic of ‘Issues before the 16th BRICS Summit’. The talk was attended by eminent diplomats, experts and scholars in hybrid mode. Discussions during the talk pertained to India’s approach in the dynamic multilateral forum of BRICS. Roundtable on The Elections in UK and France and its Implications for India

On 08 August, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organized a Roundtable on "The Elections in UK and France and its Implications for India". The panel included Professor Gulshan Sachdeva, Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar and Swasti Rao. The discussion was also attended by Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director (VIF), Lt. General R. K. Sawhney (Retd.), Ruchita Beri and other senior fellows and researcher’s from the VIF. Lt. General R. K. Sawhney delivered the opening remarks by highlighting the recently held elections in UK and France.

Interaction with Ambassador of Greece to India

The Vivekananda International Foundation hosted a discussion on "India-Greece Relations in a Strategic Context" on 13 June 2024. The key speaker for the session was Amb. Aliki Koutsomitopoulou, Ambassador of Greece to India. India and Greece are closely engaging to boost bilateral trade with plans to double trade flows by 2030s. There are parallel negotiations on Free Trade Agreement. Both states are pillars of stability in their respective regions. The mutual commitment towards peace brought both the states closer.

Discussion on Maintaining Continuity in India-US Relations across Transition

The VIF organised a virtual meeting on “Maintaining Continuity in India-US Relations across Transition” on 12 July 2024, where the participants from two sides deliberated on India-US relations post the swearing-in of the new NDA government. During the month, the VIF Pakistan Experts Group discussed critical issues shaping Pakistan's current landscape. The session focussed on Pakistan's political outlook, noting the dominant role of the military following the marginalisation of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The current Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, faces challenges, reflecting the military's enduring influence despite opposition limitations. Economically, despite potential IMF support and Gulf investments, structural reforms remain elusive, with a shift away from Chinese engagement noted.

During the month, the VIF Pakistan Study Group discussed critical issues shaping Pakistan's current landscape. Among the key topics deliberated were the post-election political dynamics, judiciary crisis, status of political figures Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, terrorism escalation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, Shehbaz Sharif's Saudi Arabia visit, and Afghanistan-Pakistan relations. Following February's parliamentary elections, tensions surged among major parties, leading to disqualification of PTI-backed SIC by the Election Commission.

Monthly Compilation of Views of VIF Expert Groups: March 2024

During the month, the VIF Neighbourhood Experts Group hosted a roundtable discussion to analyse recent developments in Nepal and their implications for India. It emerged that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's removal of the Nepali Congress from the government marked a significant political shift, as he welcomed the Communist Party of Nepal — Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) and two other parties to form a new government, reminiscent of previous coalitions since 2022.

International Strategic Engagement Capsule (IN-STEP)

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a two-day International Strategic Engagement Programme (IN-STEP) module on March 26-27, 2024, for 37 senior policymakers (both civil and military) including 29 from overseas. The overseas participants came from 21 countries, namely Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Comoros, Guyana, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Surinam, Tanzania, and Thailand.
