Interaction on ‘One Road, One Belt’ with Chinese Delegation

A five-member delegation from China Institute of International Studies, led by Dr. Guo Xiangang, Senior Research Fellow, called on the VIF faculty on Nov 24, 2014 as part of a larger deliberative process initiated by Chinese think tanks across the Asian region to garner support for China’s proposed ‘one road, one economic belt’, an initiative that seeks to integrate the vast Eurasian landmass through various sea and land-based economic corridors.

Interaction on US-Pakistan Relations

Daniel S. Markey, a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (C.F.R.) and the author of ‘No Exit from Pakistan: America's Tortured Relationship with Islamabad’ held an intense and wide ranging interaction with the VIF faculty on19 Nov 2014.

VIF Visit to Vietnam

A VIF delegation led by its Director, Gen (Retd) N C Vij, visited Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city from 02 to 05 Nov 2014. The delegation included Vice Admiral (Retd) KK Nayyar, Chairman, Board of Trustees, VIF, Lt Gen (Retd) R K Sawhney, Ambassador TCA Rangachari and Vice Admiral (Retd) Anup Singh.

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and its South Asian Connection: An Indian Perspective

A Brief Background to the Evolution of ISIS: Today, one of the most serious threats that have engulfed a large portion of the Middle East is the emergence of the Sunni Muslim extremist group, infamously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). After capturing a sizeable territory in Iraq and Syria, the group changed its name to Islamic State (IS).

Talk by UK’s Secretary of State for Defence, Rt. Hon. Michael Fallon MP

The United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Defence, Rt. Hon. Michael Fallon MP delivered a perceptive talk at the VIF, on ‘the UK and India – together in an uncertain world’, during his one-day visit to India on 30 Oct 2014 which was essentially directed towards commemorating India’s military contributions to the British war efforts in World War I (1914-18).

Interaction with Mr. Joseph M. Cohen, National Security Advisor of Israel

On October 22, 2014 Members of VIF faculty interacted with an Israeli delegation led by Dr. Joseph Cohen. He was accompanied by Israel’s ambassador to India H.E. Daniel Carmon. Dr. Cohen briefed the VIF faculty on the talks he had with India’s NSA Mr. Ajit Doval and the ascending trajectory of Indo-Israel relations. He mentioned that both India and Israel share common perceptions on the questions of terrorism and the nature of threat arising there from. He gave out in brief the Israeli perspective on the situation in West Asia and virulence of ISIS threat.

Interaction with Chinese Communist Party Delegation

A six-member Chinese delegation from the International Department, Communist Party of China, led by Dr. Lu Jianzhang, Deputy DG of Research Office, interacted with VIF faculty on, 20th of October, 2014. Interaction with Japan’s Former Deputy Minster of Foreign Affairs

The VIF hosted Mr. Hitoshi Tanaka, Japan’s former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and currently Chairman of the Institute for International Strategy at the Japan's Research Institute, on 17 Oct 2014, for an interaction on the Japanese perception of strategic developments in Asia-Pacific including bilateral relations between India and Japan. He was accompanied by Japan’s Ambassador to India H.E. Mr.Takeshi Yagi. Interaction with Taiwanese Strategist Dr. Francis Yi-Hua Kan

In an informal interaction with the VIF’s faculty, held on 15 Oct 2014, Dr. Francis Yi-Hua Kan, former Senior Advisor to the National Security Council, Republic of China, discussed Indo-Taiwan relations and the strategic situation in the Asia-Pacific region. In his opening remarks, Lt Gen (Retd) R.K. Sahwney, Distinguished Fellow, VIF, underscored the commonality between India and Taiwan, especially in terms of multi-party democracy.

Interaction with H.E. Alexander Kadakin, Russia’s Ambassador to India

Russia's Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin was invited to VIF on 14 Oct, 2014 for an interaction with a select group of strategic experts to discuss the ‘Indo-Russian Relations and the Way Forward’. The interaction assumes significance in the backdrop of the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India later this year for the annual summit.
