Niti aayog in 2018 came out with a significant report titled 'Composite Water Management Index Report' which very clearly stated that India was facing the worst water crisis in its history impacting millions of lives and livelihood. The report emphasized the shortage of water in both urban and rural India, deteriorating water quality, over-extraction and contamination of groundwater, inter-state disagreements on water related issues, and lack of water data as some of the key issues the country is grappling with at present.
