Hawkish John Bolton sidelined for Trump-Kim summit amid Mike Pompeo’s rise but will lurk in the wings
7 June 2018
Just weeks after John Bolton’s hard-line rhetoric infuriated North Korea and nearly derailed a planned summit between Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, the U.S. national security adviser appears to have taken a back seat to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the historic meeting.
While the hawkish Bolton — who has adopted a lower-key approach in recent days — is expected to be in Singapore for the talks on Tuesday, Pompeo has taken the lead as the administration assumes a softer tone toward Pyongyang ahead of the summit, several U.S. officials said. Click here to read...
Paul Manafort accused of attempted witness tampering
5 June 2018
US prosecutors have accused Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who is facing multiple charges of money laundering, bank fraud and illegal lobbying, of attempting to tamper with witnesses.
A motion submitted by special counsel Robert Mueller on Monday, who is heading up the main investigation into alleged Russian election meddling, said that Manafort had contacted witnesses by phone and encrypted text messaging for the purpose of securing "materially false testimony".
It added that such activities amounted to a violation of his bail terms, which "triggers the statutory presumption in favour of detention", meaning he could face jail time before his trials. Click here to read...
China is Alone at Sea. That Means the U.S. Has the Advantage
5 June 2018
On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the dinner address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual meeting of defense ministers held in Singapore. As with keynotes by Australia’s Malcolm Turnbull and Japan’s Shinzo Abe in preceding years, Modi championed democratic principles and a free and open Indo-Pacific, while emphasizing respect for territorial rights and international law rights.

Haley hits UN human rights office over condemnation of US immigration policy
5 June 2018
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley rebuked the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for "hypocrisy" in its call for an end to a Trump administration policy that could lead to the separation of families detained on the US southern border.
"Once again, the United Nations shows its hypocrisy by calling out the United States while it ignores the reprehensible human rights records of several members of its own Human Rights Council," Haley said in a statement Tuesday.
"While the High Commissioner's office ignorantly attacks the United States with words, the United States leads the world with its actions, like providing more humanitarian assistance to global conflicts than any other nation," she continued. "We will remain a generous country, but we are also a sovereign country, with laws that decide how best to control our borders and protect our people. Neither the United Nations nor anyone else will dictate how the United States upholds its borders." Click here to read...
L.A. County officials demand answers after more than 118K were left off voter rosters
6 June 2018
Los Angeles County leaders prodded their elections chief for answers Wednesday after more than 118,000 people were left off voter rosters on Election Day.
"We fell short,” said Dean C. Logan, Los Angeles County registrar-recorder/county clerk, at a special hearing at the county Board of Supervisors on the voting blunder.
The faulty rosters, which were attributed to a printing error, affected roughly 2.3 percent of the registered voters across the county and 35 percent of voting locations, according to county figures. Logan called the mistakes a “data and system” issue that had nothing to do with voter eligibility. Click here to read...
Feuding with Allies, Trump May Need Success in Singapore More than Kim
10 June 2018
Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un—the leaders of two countries that have technically been at war for the past seventy years—will make history, on Tuesday, just by shaking hands. They will meet at a luxury island resort, in Singapore, where peacocks strut the tropical grounds that were a pirates’ haven in the nineteenth century and a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in the twentieth. Two days have been allocated for the summit, although Trump said, on Saturday, that he would know “within the first minute” if a deal is doable with the North Korean leader. “If I think it won’t happen I’m not going to waste my time,” Trump said at a press conference at the G-7 summit, in Canada. “I don’t want to waste his time.” Click here to read...

"After India and Pakistan officially joined the organization and formally started their work, it is clear that the SCO has become a global organization. This is an obvious fact.
