Strategic Discussion| Global and Regional Implications of the Ukraine Crisis

The VIF convened a timely, two-part virtual strategic discussion on 24 February 2022 with a follow-up session on 3 March 2022 in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The discussion was focussed on assessing the Global and Regional Implications of the Ukraine crisis following the events of 24 February wherein Russian ground forces moved into Ukraine from multiple sides and seized control of the key port city of Kherson. Turkey’s Role as a Regional Actor in Central Asia: An Assessment

Central Asia’s geostrategic location at the crossroads of East and West has shaped substantial geopolitical rivalries in the region. Even though the region is within Russia’s sphere of influence, China has made significant advances in Central Asia after the fall of the Soviet Union due to the Central Asian republics’ multi-vector foreign policy. Turkey has a considerable interest in this geopolitically crucial region for two primary reasons.

Monthly Compilation of Views of VIF Expert Groups: February 2022

The month of February 2022 at Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) was filled with meetings and dialogues. In the month VIF organized four expert group interactions, and three dialogues with Russia (Russian International Affairs Council), Japan (Japan Institute for National Fundamentals) and ‘Quad Plus’ through webinars in the month. All these interactions and dialogues covered a wide spectrum of topics as well as geography across the world. The selection of topics are contemporary and of interest to academia, policy makers, decision makers and the general public.

Vimarsh on Russia-Ukraine Crisis

On 14 March, 2022, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a Vimarsh on the “Russia-Ukraine Crisis”. The session encompassed a series of introductory remarks by Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, and a talk on the stated theme by Ambassador D. Bala Venkatesh Varma (India’s former Ambassador to the Russian Federation) who focussed especially on the strategic trends and the impact of this ongoing crisis on the world in all the strategic dimensions.

Russia Ukraine Conundrum

… Biden said that President Vladimir Putin “has never seen sanctions like the ones I promised will be imposed if he moves”... “If they actually do what they’re capable of doing with the forces amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia if they further invade Ukraine, and that our allies and partners are ready to impose severe costs and significant harm on Russia and the Russian economy…” as of end February 2022, all these conjectures had been thrown in the wind. The Vivekananda International Foundation organized an online brainstorming session on Strategic and Economic Outlook for 2022 on 10 January 2022. VIF-JINF Webinar on Strategic Outlook for Indo-Pacific in 2022

The Vivekananda International Foundation organized a joint webinar with the Japan Institute of National Fundamentals (JINF) on 10 February 2022 on Strategic Outlook for Indo-Pacific in 2022. After initial remarks by Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF and Ms Yoshiko Sakurai, President JINF, presentations were made by Amb Anil Wadhwa, Distinguished Fellow VIF and Hiroshi Yuasa, Senior Fellow JINF. The webinar discussed a range of issues from shaping a new regional security architecture to engaging ASEAN and analyzing ramifications of China’s military rise and Ukraine standoff on the region.

Quad Plus Dialogue

The latest iteration of the long standing Quad Plus Dialogue was hosted virtually by the Vivekananda International Foundation on 14 February 2022. Participating think-tanks representing the other Quad partners included the Heritage Foundation, USA; the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA), Japan; and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) Australia. In this edition of the dialogue, the Taiwan based think-tank, the Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR) joined in as a ‘Plus Partner’.

The African Continental Free Trade Area and Opportunities for India

On 23rd February 2022, the Vivekananda Foundation organised a lecture on "The African Continental Free Trade Area and Opportunities for India". The Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) is a critical African project to accelerate the continent's long-term integration and economic goal. The CFTA represents an immense opportunity to address Africa's economic vulnerabilities in the global economic order, manifested and exacerbated by WTO and other multilateral and bilateral trade agreements imbalances.

India-Central Asia: Defence and Security Cooperation

Central Asia has emerged as an important geopolitical space after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Its geostrategic location at the crossroads of East and West, South, Central, and West Asia has often resulted in the spread of challenges beyond the region’s immediate borders. Three Central Asian Republics, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, share a 2,500 kilometre long and porous border with Afghanistan, making the region exposed to the unfolding crisis in Kabul.
