Vimarsh on the Earth Sciences & their Importance for the Nation's Well-being - Dr. Shailesh Nayak

On the ninth of February, 2022, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a Vimarsh on the “Earth Sciences and their Importance for the Nation's Well-being”. The session encompassed a series of introductory remarks by Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, and a presentation on the stated theme by Dr Shailesh Nayak- Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies and Distinguished Scientist from the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

National Workshop on ‘Earthquake Preparedness in India’

The VIF, the Policy Perspectives Foundation (PPF) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organised the workshop when a number of leading experts from across the country came together to deliberate on topics such as earthquake risk reduction, safety of the built environment, earthquake response, earthquake mitigation, and public-private partnership in promoting earthquake preparedness. Minister of State for Urban Development Shri Hardeep Puri delivered a Special Address at the workshop.

Seminar on ‘Towards Reducing Earthquake Risks of India’

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organized a seminar ‘Towards Reducing Earthquake Risks of India’ in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on April 12, 2012. Held, by coincidence, against the backdrop of a powerful earthquake which had taken place a day before off the coast of Indonesia leading to a Tsunami warning across 28 littoral states of the India Ocean including India, the conference attracted a large number of people including subject experts.

Managing Disasters

Gen N C Vij, Vice Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, delivered a talk at VIF on April 16 on “India's need, capacities and challenges of managing national disasters -- both natural and man-made”. Gen Vij also gave a power point presentation on the subject. A number of senior retired and serving government officials from civil and military fields attended the talk and also gave their expert views.
