Pakistan Insights 2023

Pakistan Insights 2023 is the fourth in the ‘Pakistan Insights’ series brought out by the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) to deepen understanding of Pakistan. Ideas for the various chapters are based on monthly discussions held in the Pakistan Study Group (PSG) that was set up in February 2018 in the VIF. The previous three editions- Pakistan Insights 2019, Pakistan Insights 2020 and Pakistan Insights 2021-22 received widespread acclaim and it is hoped that this edition, too, would be well received.

Roundtable Discussion on Ongoing Crisis in Myanmar and Implications for India

On 21 December, the Vivekananda International Foundation organised a Round Table Discussion on the “Ongoing Crisis in Myanmar and Implications for India”. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF delivered the opening remarks, followed by brief presentations by Amb Preet Mallik, Amb Rajiv Bhatia, Amb Gautam Mukhopadhya, Brig Rahul Bhonsle and Dr Cchavi Vasisht. The presentations were followed by discussions, with a special focus on what should be India’s way forward.

Narrative of Despondent Pashtuns: Terrorism, Ethnicity and the Pakistani Military

This primary research uses in-depth interviews to investigate the experiences and perceptions of the ethnic Pashtuns of Pakistan’s former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) regarding terrorism, ethnicity and the Pakistani military, especially after the emergence of the Pashtun Tahafuz (Protection) Movement (PTM). Since there is a dearth of literature on the perspectives of the terrorism-affected Pashtuns, this original research focusses on their direct experiences.

Interaction with Visiting Delegation of Political Leaders from Nepal

On 12 December 2023, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised an interaction with a ten member visiting delegation of political leaders from Nepal. Dr. Arvind Gupta, the Director VIF, gave the introductory remarks, followed by the interaction. Monthly Compilation of Views of VIF Expert Groups: August 2023

Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) held a number of discussions during the month. Geopolitical tensions and technological competition are affecting US-China economic engagement. Factors influencing economic dynamics include sanctions, export controls, and supply chain adjustments have consequently come to international relevance since they affect countries around the globe including India. These issues along with the impact of US-China economic competition on India and the Indo-Pacific region were deliberated in the US Expert Group.

Delivery of Humanitarian Assistance in Myanmar: Lessons Learnt and the Way Forward

As COVID-19 struck the world countries, it took some months to recover back to their normal social and economic lives. However, for the people of Myanmar the crisis deepened further due to the military takeover in February 2021. The need for humanitarian support has increased since the military takeover; with almost 266 townships out of 330 have been targets of numerous violent attacks. The situation is further exacerbated by the military’s strategy of preventing life-saving humanitarian aid from reaching those who need it.

Discussion on Outcomes of PM Dahal’s Visit and Developing Indo-Nepalese Relationship

On 19 July 2023, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a talk on “Outcomes of PM Dahal’s Visit and Developing Indo-Nepalese Relationship”. Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF, gave the introductory remarks, followed by presentations by Amb Ranjit Rae, Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma and Mr Sanjay Chadha on the overall outcomes of the visit of PM Dahal, the security dimension and water resource cooperation.

Revisiting Myanmar: Present Through Past

The February 2021 military takeover in Myanmar has had adverse impact on the country`s political, economic and social landscape, which was undergoing a democratic transition. It was a step back in the democratic journey the country had embarked upon since adopting the 2008 military-drafted Constitution. The military extended the emergency rule on 01 February 2023, and the elections to be conducted per the 2008 Constitution mandate were further deferred.

Interaction with Prof (Dr) Istiaq Ahmed

On 08 June 2023, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised an interaction with Prof (Dr) Ishtiaq Ahmed from Stockholm University. Prof Ahmed is a Swedish political scientist of Pakistani origin and a renowned author of books like Jinnah: His Successes, Failures and Role in History; Pakistan: The Garrison State, Origins, Evolution, Consequences (1947-2011); and, The Punjab Bloodied, Partitioned and Cleansed.

Discussion on India-Bangladesh Relations in the Face of Upcoming Elections

On 08 May 2023, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a talk by Prof Sreeradha Datta under the Neighbourhood Studies Centre on "India-Bangladesh Relations in the Face of Upcoming Elections". At the beginning of the talk, Lt General R K Sawhney welcomed all the participants and handed over the proceedings to Amb. Pankaj Saran, who shared some key insights on the developments in Bangladesh and welcomed Prof Sreeradha Datta for the presentation.
