Indian Ocean Region

Conference on Security in Indian Ocean Region, Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Tokyo

A conference was organised by Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) on February 22 & 23, 2018, at Tokyo, to conclude a two years project that explored the possibilities for major democracies - namely Australia, India, Japan and the United States - to cooperate for maintenance of peace and stability in the Indian Ocean. The countries were represented by representatives from think tanks of Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), India, SPF, Japan, Australian National University (ANU) and SPF, USA. Representatives of VIF were Amb Kawal Sibal, Dr Vijay Sakhuja and Cmde Somen Banerjee.

Discussion on ‘India and the North West Indian Ocean Region: Bridging the Gulf

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) on 14 Jul 2017 organised a two-part Round Table Discussion with a panel of eminent maritime security and foreign policy experts, including Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Anil Chopra (Retd), former FOC-in-C, Western and Eastern Naval Commands, Dr. Vijay Sakhuja, Director, National Maritime Foundation, Amb Rajiv Sikri, former Secretary (East), MEA, Amb Dinkar Srivastava, India’s former Ambassador to Iran, Cmde Lalit Kumar (Retd), and Mr. Saurabha Chandra, among others.

Round Table Discussion on “India’s Indian Ocean Strategy”

The Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) recently convened a Round Table Discussion (RTD) on ‘India’s Indian Ocean Strategy’. The discussion was intended to examine the steps that India needs to take, to construct a strategy for the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), especially after the Prime Minister had articulated his vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), in March 2015, at Mauritius. The discussion was attended by a number of luminaries including senior retired diplomatic, naval and government functionaries as also senior serving officers.
