On 01 August, the Joint Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs, J.P Singh visited the Vivekananda International Foundation to brief on the Third Doha Meeting on Afghanistan which took place at Doha. The meeting was attended by Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director (VIF), Lt. General R. K. Sawhney (Retd.), Brig. Vinod Anand (Retd), Ambassador Amar Sinha, Brig. Rahul Bhonsle, and other researchers from the VIF.
The discussion started with the opening remarks by Dr. Arvind Gupta highlighting India’s age-old relationship with Afghanistan. Speaker, J.P Singh started his talk by briefing the Third Doha Meeting on Afghanistan, followed by the reasons for India’s participation at the event. He further mentioned the factors that motivated the Taliban to join this third round of talks initiated by the United Nations, after the new regime in Afghanistan consecutively denied to participate in the first and second round of Doha talks. The speaker also mentioned that the presence of Taliban representatives at the third Doha meeting shows the regime’s willingness in engaging with the international community. The meeting also discussed various aspects of engagement with the Taliban and addressed India’s security concerns in the region.
