The anti-terror federal probe agency NIA in its investigation into a case related to smuggling of weapons in the North-East region of the country, has found that ‘hawala’ channels are being used to pay to Myanmar-based suppliers of arms and ammunition, which are illegally brought to Manipur and Mizoram, sources here said on Sunday. China-Myanmar border trade between 1 April and 10 May 2024 dropped by US$ 127.28 million compared to the same period last year. This year overland trade with China was worth US$ 280.44 between 1 April and 10 May. Last year over the same period it was worth US$ 407.7 million, according to the junta’s Ministry of Commerce’s trade figures. Total trade at the Muse border crossing was US$ 140.216 million, of which US$ 138 million was exports and US$ 2.216 million was imports. Total trade at the Kampaiti border crossing was US$ 67.66 million, of which, US$ 55.895 million was exports and US$ 11.765 million was imports. Total trade at the Kengtung border crossing was US$ 71.27 million, of which, US$ 25.333 million was exports and US$ 45.946 million was imports. Total trade at the Lweje border crossing was US$ $1.214 million, which was all imports. There were no exports from Lweje during this period.
