Afghanistan blast: Taliban governor killed in his office – BBC

The Taliban governor of Afghanistan's northern Balkh province has been killed in a suicide attack claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group. Mohammad Dawood Muzammil was killed in his office in the provincial capital, Mazar-e Sharif, on Thursday. He is the most senior Taliban official to be killed since the militants returned to power in 2021. Violence has since decreased sharply, but pro-Taliban figures have been targeted by IS. Dr. Shaida Abdali was appointed Afghan ambassador to Tokyo in May 2021. In August that year, however, Kabul was captured by the Taliban, who went on to establish an interim government in the following month. While there is no diplomatic recognition between the Japanese government and the Taliban, Japan continues to recognize Abdali as the representative of Afghanistan. The US State Department has announced nearly USD 26 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, for those people in Burma affected by ongoing violence, and for communities hosting refugees from Burma. With this new funding, the US’ total assistance for those affected by the Rakhine State and Rohingya crisis has reached nearly USD 2.1 billion since August 2017, when over 7,40,000 Rohingya were forced to flee to safety in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, according to a press statement issued by the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, during the launch of the 2023 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis in Bangladesh. Fifteen years ago, Bhutan announced that by 2020 it would be able to produce an additional 10,000 megawatts of electricity from hydropower. So far, the country is able to generate less than a quarter of this target: total installed capacity is 2,326 MW, up from 1,480 MW in 2008. Of the four hydropower plants under the 10,000 MW scheme, only one, Mangdechhu, has been completed and is operational.
