Panjshir: Massoud Wants to Talk But Ready to Fight: Tolo News

In a statement to Reuters, Ahmad Massoud, the son of Afghanistan’s late National Hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, said he will never hand over Panjshir province to anyone, even as the Taliban increases its forces near the mountainous valley in northern Afghanistan. Massoud said he hoped for negotiations to resolve the issues, but he is ready for war if the negotiations fail.

Myanmar’s Anti-Junta Resistance Inflicting Rising Casualties: Report - The Diplomat

According to a report in The Irrawaddy, which cited a representative from the People’s Defense Force (PDF) in Gangaw township, the casualties stemmed from two incidents. The first took place on August 19, when a vehicle carrying junta soldiers, one of a convoy of six, triggered a landmine planted by the civilian resistance on the Gangaw-Kale Highway. At least 20 soldiers were killed in the explosion and many others were injured, according to The Irrawaddy.

For the time being, Western policy makers appear to be biding their time and playing it safe by outsourcing all the dilemmas surrounding the Myanmar issue to ASEAN—which they must know full well is a nonstarter because of the political and diplomatic impotence of the bloc. But sooner or later, the West will have to do something in order to defend its geopolitical interests in the region. And that “something” will depend on what happens next in China-Myanmar relations. Policies could also be determined by the outcome of ongoing internal upheavals in Myanmar. If worst comes to worst, the region could even end up having a failed state in its midst.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Myanmar (Burma) near Myitkyina, Myitkyinā District, Kachin State, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Tuesday 24 August 2021 at 8:15 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

The enhanced funding of $650 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDR), approved on Monday, aims to mitigate the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already killed 4.44 million people and infected more than 212 million across the globe. The total amount of $650 billion will be distributed among member states in accordance with their quota of the Special Drawing Rights (SDRs). 4,355 more test positive for COVID-19 - Daily FT

Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 detections rose to 394,355 with 4,355 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday. This is the second consecutive day where daily COVID-19 detections have exceeded 4,000. The patients detected yesterday include 4,353 persons from the New Year cluster and two overseas arrivals. According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 14,716 PCR tests were carried out yesterday.
