Preface Terrorism has been synonymous with Pakistan for years. Post 9/11, Pakistan had an opportunity to make a break with its use of jihadist terrorism as an instrument of state policy. But despite all the international pressure and notwithstanding all its claims of becoming a frontline partner in the Global War on Terror, Pakistan continued to support and provide sanctuary to jihadists, especially those who escaped the US-led offensive in Afghanistan.

American scholar and academic Dr C Christine Fair presented her latest book “Fighting to the end: The Pakistan Army’s Way of War” before a distinguished gathering of scholars, soldiers and diplomats at the Vivekananda International Foundation on July 14, 2014.

Interaction with Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Member of Pakistan’s National Assembly

An interaction was held with Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Member of Pakistan’s National Assembly and President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazal-ur-Rehman group) on 17 December 2013. The Maulana shared his perspectives on several issues related to Indo-Pak relations and the emerging situation in Afghanistan. The interaction was chaired by Mr Ajit Doval, KC, Director VIF and attended by members of the VIF faculty. Maulana Mahmood A Madani, Executive Member of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind was also present on the occasion.

Reports indicate that with the change of government in Pakistan and the exchange of visits by special envoys, the Government of India is prepared to resume the composite/comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, interrupted since January this year as a sequel to the beheading of Indian soldiers by the Pakistani army on the LOC in J&K. The possibility that discussions on Sir Creek and Tulbul Navigation may take place even before the proposed meeting of the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers in September in New York on the margins of the UNGA meeting has been aired in the media.

Interaction on Situation in Pakistan and Regional Security

A delegation led by Ambassador Richard Oslon, US Ambassador to Pakistan visited VIF on 17 April 2013. The delegation interacted with members of the faculty led by Shri Ajit Doval, KC, Director VIF on recent occurrences in Pakistan and the overall security situation in the region. The US ambassador also touched upon some aspects of US perspective on evolving situation Afghanistan.

Interaction with Maulana Fazlur Rehman

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, former leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan and chief of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUIF) visited VIF on February 16, 2011. He was accompanied by the former Tourism Minister, Attaur Rehman and Senator Dr Khalid Soomro.
