Replied by VIF : Samvad is derived from the Sanskrit word "Samvadam" meaning dialogue. It is a joint effort of two of the oldest, living, tolerant, non-conflicting civilisations and philosophies - Hinduism and Buddhism - conceived as an attempt, through a process of dialogue, to shift the paradigm of global discourse on two critical issues : those of the Conflicts, from Conflict Resolution to Conflict Avoidance; and, that of the Environment, from Environmental Regulations to Environmental Consciousness.

Inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Modi, this is a landmark initiative of the Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi, and the Japan Foundation, Tokyo, in association with the International Buddhist Confederation, world's premier Buddhist body. The purpose of the series of dialogues is to promote an environment of greater peace, harmony and security in this world. There have been four such dialogues held - in 2015 (New Delhi), 2016 (Tokyo) and 2017 (Yangon), the fourth being held recently at Tokyo on 05 July, 2018. The latest one was attended by many revered scholars coming from many nations, and duly addressed by Prime Minister Modi through his message and Prime Minister Abe in person.
