A four member delegation led by Prof. Sui Guangjun, Vice President of Guangdong Institute for International Strategies and Party Secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies interacted with the VIF faculty led by Amb. Satish Chandra on 25 November 2016. Prof. Guangjun and his team spoke on India-China bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation, their roles in global governance, and cooperation opportunities under the 21st Maritime Silk Road Initiative. From the VIF side Dr. Sanjaya Baru spoke on Indian economy and areas of cooperation with China including India’s perspective on China’s belt and Road Initiative while Cmde Gopal Suri gave out views on Possible Areas of Cooperation with China in the Maritime Domain.
Amb. Satish Chandra pointed out the areas where China needs to be more sensitive about India’s interests, like the issue of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, and China’s technical hold on Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group leader Masood Azhar being included in UN designated terror list. Similarly, China’s views on India’s application for NSG membership was another irritant in the progress of smooth relationship between the two Asian giants. India’s objections to China Pakistan Economic Corridor are also well known as the corridor passes through Indian territory occupied by Pakistan.
While Prof. Sui and his team emphasized on mutual cooperation at the global platforms where both sides share similar perspectives on many issues, Dr. Sanjaya Baru explained the positive aspects of India’s economic growth and how China and India could benefit from synergies and complementarities of each other’s economies.
The presentations were followed by a vigourous interactive session on how best to address mutual differences and capitalize on convergences.
