Bhutan’s growing export sector has reduced the trade deficit by Nu 11.78 billion, bringing it down to Nu 36.35 billion as of September this year, compared to the same period last year. Going through the finance ministry’s figures for two years, the deficit was reported at Nu 48.13 billion and Nu 45.22 billion in the same period for 2023 and 2022, respectively. The government has today launched the formulation of a 20-year national development plan with the assistance of the UNDP and the Australian Government. The masterplan will be developed within one year in consultation with all relevant stakeholders and the public along with various sectors and political parties. The Finance Ministry has proposed to borrow MVR 16.8 billion to cover expenditure in 2025. According to the proposed state budget, half of the money will be borrowed from friendly countries and the other half will be borrowed from banks and organizations. The proposed budget states that MVR 1.7 billion will be borrowed from friendly countries. That is MVR 600 million more than the revised budget for this year. MVR 15 billion is to be borrowed from various banks and associations. That is MVR 5 billion less than the amount fixed for the current fiscal year.
